How We Care: Protection and Stewardship

We adhered to, and facilitated the creation and operationalization of, a multi-stakeholder monitoring team to monitor the mining project and its environmental impacts. This Multi-Partite Monitoring Team (MMT) is established and operated through deputation by the Mine Rehabilitation Fund Committee (MRFC) and is empowered to conduct independent monitoring of our compliance to the commitments in the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Program (EPEP) and the ECC conditions.

We have developed and deployed the following control strategies as part of our efforts toward responsible mining:

  • All land disturbances directly resulting from the construction and development will be progressively rehabilitated to return it to as near as possible to their former natural state; we have established our own nursery to support these rehabilitation works.
  • Draining at the mine site will be coursed through a series of canals to a siltation pond where particles are separated to ensure clear water overflow.
  • Domestic sewage is disposed of in sewage tanks with no sewage disposed directly into rivers and creeks
  • All laboratory chemicals are neutralized and before flushing into the drainage system and siltation ponds.
  • Waste water from kitchens and cafeterias pass through grease traps to collect oil and fats before being discharged.
  • Motor pool repair facilities are fitted with oil traps to ensure oil and grease is collected with only clear water discharged into the drainage system.
  • Usage and pumping of water are scheduled to minimize the drying up of nearby creeks and wells, and to mitigate the lowering of the water table.
